Importation of Controlled Drugs Defence Specialists
When you are accused of importing controlled substances, fear can set in quickly. Investigations by Border Force, HMRC or specialist agencies can feel overwhelming. You may face international scrutiny, seizure of property and the risk of lengthy custody.
At Ashmans, our criminal defence solicitors defend importation of controlled drugs cases across England and Wales. We combine legal precision with discretion and care to protect your rights from the outset.
- You’re frightened about potential prison sentences or travel restrictions.
- You want someone who understands the law, the evidence and the agencies involved.
- You need a strong defence strategy to challenge the prosecution case.
With Ashmans, you do not have to face this alone. We stand with you at every stage and work to protect your position.
Importation of Controlled Drugs and the Law
The importation of controlled drugs is governed primarily by the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971 and related Customs and Excise legislation. Under Section 3 of the Act, it is an offence to import or export a controlled drug without lawful authority.
- Bringing or attempting to bring controlled substances into the UK without authorisation.
- Being knowingly concerned in the importation of such drugs.
- Assisting or facilitating another person’s importation activity.
- Was knowingly involved in or concerned with the importation.
- Had knowledge or reasonable suspicion that the goods were controlled drugs.
- Participated voluntarily or through an organised arrangement.
Agencies that may be involved include Border Force, HMRC, police, the National Crime Agency and the Crown Prosecution Service, depending on the nature of the case. Evidence may include phone downloads, shipping records, CCTV, communication records, travel records and financial transactions.
Our solicitors for drug importation offences know how to challenge searches, seizures, warrants, disclosure and the evidence said to link a person to the importation.

Essential actions against accusations
From the moment you are accused of importing controlled drugs or become aware of a Border Force or police investigation, your actions can significantly influence the outcome of your case. Follow these steps:
Act quickly. Engage Ashmans. Protect your future.
Do not contact co-accused, witnesses or third parties about the allegations, and do not post or comment on social media.
Even if you believe you are innocent, do not answer questions from Border Force officers or police without your specialist criminal defence solicitor present. You are entitled to free and independent legal advice at the police station.
Importation cases under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971 are serious and often complex. With 24/7 availability, Ashmans can provide urgent legal protection and immediate representation.
Keep boarding passes, booking confirmations, messages, banking records and any other documents that may support your defence.
If you are released under investigation or on bail, follow every condition carefully. Breaching conditions can seriously harm your position.
