Importation of Controlled Drugs 

Importation of controlled drugs is primarily prosecuted under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971 and the Customs and Excise Management Act 1979. It involves knowingly bringing a controlled drug into the UK, or being concerned in its importation. The seriousness depends on the class of drug, the quantity involved and the person’s alleged role. 

Penalties are severe. For Class A drugs, the maximum sentence is life imprisonment and/or an unlimited fine. Sentencing depends on the quantity, level of involvement, such as courier, organiser or leading role, and any aggravating or mitigating factors.
