Human Trafficking & Modern Slavery 

Under the Modern Slavery Act 2015, offences include arranging or facilitating the travel of another person with a view to exploitation, holding someone in slavery or servitude, or requiring them to perform forced or compulsory labour. Exploitation can include sexual exploitation, labour exploitation, criminal exploitation and removal of organs.

Convictions for slavery and human trafficking offences carry severe penalties, including life imprisonment in the most serious cases. Sentences depend on the nature of the exploitation, the level of control alleged, and the individual’s role in the case. Confiscation proceedings may also follow.

Yes. The law allows prosecution where a person is alleged to have arranged, facilitated or been knowingly concerned in exploitation. However, the prosecution must prove the required intent or knowledge beyond reasonable doubt.

Yes. Company directors or managers may face prosecution if they are alleged to have consented to or connived in offending conduct. Corporate investigations can also run alongside individual prosecutions.

Witness evidence, digital material and credibility issues may become central to the case and require careful review.
