Production of Controlled Drugs 

Production of a controlled drug is an offence under section 4 of the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971. It includes cultivating cannabis plants, manufacturing illegal substances or being concerned in the production process of a controlled drug listed under the Act. 

Penalties depend on the class of drug involved and the scale of the operation. For Class A drugs, the maximum sentence in the Crown Court is life imprisonment. Class B and Class C offences also carry serious custodial sentences and unlimited fines. Sentencing is guided by factors such as role, quantity and harm.
