Assault Occasioning Actual Bodily Harm 

ABH is an offence under section 47 of the Offences Against the Person Act 1861. It occurs when an assault or battery causes actual bodily harm, meaning injury that is more than transient or trifling, such as significant bruising, cuts or fractures. 

ABH is an either-way offence and can be heard in the Magistrates’ Court or Crown Court. It carries a maximum sentence of five years’ imprisonment, depending on the seriousness of the injury, the circumstances and any previous convictions.
